Banjarmasin is one of the city and the capital dariprovinsi South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The name comes from the term Banjarmasih. So called because patih called Patih Still, or Patih Oloh Still. Still in the language Ngaju Oloh means the Malays. Village Oloh Banjarmasih from Masi or Kampung Melayu. Banjarmasih name is then called the Dutch Banjarmasih. Until the year 1664 letters to the kingdom of the Netherlands to Indonesia Banjarmasin in the Kingdom is still called the Dutch say “Bandzermash”, because it’s hard to say it. The city’s name change as a result Banjarmasih Netherlands. At first the Dutch still call a greeting Banjarmasih in the Netherlands “Bandzermash”. Then after the year 1664 turned into Banjarmassingh. In the mid-19th century in all the letters of the Netherlands to Indonesia’s name was changed to the city of Banjarmasin. After the Japanese era name was changed back into Bandjarmasin. Finally after apply the new spelling of Indonesia, the city was BANJARMASIN. Banjarmasin entered the order of a metropolitan city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung, Makassar, Semarang, Balikpapan, and Palembang.
This city has an area of 1997 km ² or 0.019% of the total area of South Kalimantan. The number of residents in this city is as much as 627 245 inhabitants (2008) with a population density 8.712/km ². Banjarmasin is located at 3 °, 15 to 3 °, 22 south latitude and 114 °, 32 East longitude, altitude of land located at 0.16 m below sea level and almost the entire area flooded at high tide. Alluvial soil is clay-dominated structure of soil types that dominate the city of Banjarmasin. Whereas the basic rocks that formed in the basin area of metamorphic rocks derived from the surface was covered by Krakal, gravel, sand and clay that settles on the river and marsh environments.
Banjarmasin five-directed development dimension as the City Government, Trade, Ports, Industry and Tourism. In all those efforts, the Barito River occupies a major place. Life in the city of Banjarmasin is an integral part of the Barito River and its tributaries children. Located between the Barito River and dipertemuan Martapura River, the city is very strategic for trade.
In the Dutch period, Banjarmasin become port of entry and exit for all the Barito River basin and is a transit port for ships coming from Singapore and Java, to the east coast of Borneo. From Borneo, sent out the goods of forest products like rattan, resin, chalk baruskaret, jelutung, Purun mat, duck eggs, fruits, rattan wickerwork, rocks and diamonds. Incoming goods consisting of rice, salted fish, goods, glassware, kerosene, salt, iron, etc..
